Ventura County Job & Career Centers Respond to Increasing Local Unemployment Rate

As the unemployment rate hit 7.1 percent for Ventura County in August (State of California EDD), the Human Services Agency and Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County are focusing their efforts on informing the community about the free job seeker and employer services available at the Job & Career Centers throughout Ventura County.

"Thousands of people use center services every month," says Cheryl Moore, WIB executive director. "Whether people are entering the job market, re-entering after a layoff, or looking to change careers, they have convenient access to thousands of current local jobs. Free Internet access, computers, printers, and fax machines are available. Many Job & Career Centers offer monthly workshops on topics such as interview tactics, resume writing, and online job search techniques. As businesses downsize, employers are able to offer free workshops that provide guidance and hope to workers making career transitions.

Field lab cleanup advocate denounces report

The Environmental Protection Agency has decided there's no need to rid drinking water of a toxic rocket fuel ingredient that has fouled water around the country, including at a former rocket testing and nuclear reactor site in Simi Valley.

The ingredient, perchlorate, has been found on at least 395 sites in 35 states at high levels that some scientists say could interfere with thyroid function and pose developmental health risks, particularly for babies and fetuses.
