The first pitch of the spring season won't be tossed from the fields at Apollo High School, but instead from the friendly confines of the park district's new $2.8million softball complex at Big Sky Park.

A crowd of more than a thousand, including 450 ballplayers, their parents, city council members, park district members and others, is expected to be on-hand when Opening Day for Simi Valley Girls Softball kicks off at 8:45 a.m. The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will hold a separate ribboncutting ceremony for the park at 8 a.m.

Habitat for Humanity will conduct a home-ownership workshop in Simi Valley from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Three detached homes will be built near Sequoia and Royal avenues and are targeted for very low-income families. The workshop is a mandatory step for an opportunity to own one of the homes. The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley will host a Texas hold'em poker tournament on Saturday, March 3 at the clubhouse, 2850 Lemon Drive, Simi Valley.

Registration begins at 4 p.m., and the tournament starts at 5 p.m. sharp. A Texas hold'em instruction session will be taught from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The top 18 winners will receive prizes, and first prize is a 42-inch plasma TV.

The tax-deductible donation is $150 per player. Observers pay a $50 registration fee. Dinner, two drinks and raffle entry are included in the fees.

All proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley.

The Simi Valley Education Foundation will host its Celebration of Education Annual Gala from 6:30 p.m. until midnight Friday, March 10 at the Air Force One Pavilion at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

All proceeds from the fundraising event go to the Simi Valley Unified School District.

"Last year we raised $130,000 and provided $75,000 in grants to teachers and schools to purchase equipment and books," said Cindy Jacoby, the education foundation's executive director. Simi Valley Ford will host a spring blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17 in the front parking lot of the dealership, 2440 First St. in Simi Valley.

The blood drive is open to dealership staff, customers and the public. Potential donors may sign up by calling the dealership at (805) 583-0333.

All donors receive a certificate for a free Marie Callender's pie.

Donors are reminded to drink plenty of water the day before and several hours prior to donating and to eat healthy meals.

Donors may also have their vehicles washed while they give blood.

The dealership will also host a car wash at $10 per vehicle on the same day as a fundraiser for the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Simi Valley program.
