03 / 31 Arbor Day Tree Planting Start: 10:00 am End: 11:00 am The city of Simi Valley's Tree Advisory Board will host the seventh annual Arbor Day tree planting program at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Veterans Plaza in Rancho Tapo Community Park, 3700 Avenida Simi. The public is invited. This year's guest speaker will be Rorie Skei, chief deputy director for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Her talk will be on the foundation's theme "Tree are Terrific . . . and Forests are, Too." Posters created by local fifthgrade classes who participated in the National Arbor Day Poster Contest will be on display. 04 / 7 Kiwanis Club hosting cleanup of Tierra Rejada Park Start: 10:00 am End: 2:00 pm The Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley will host the cleanup of Tierra Rejada Park on Saturday, April 7 to commemorate Kiwanis One Day, a global action day benefiting children and communities. The removal of trash in the arroyo will be at 10 a.m. at the top of Stargaze Place off Tierra Rejada Road. Participants will also include the Kiwanis Club of Santa Susana, Key Clubs, Builders Clubs, SimiSu Aktion Club, Boy Scout Troop 623 and Event Medical for on-site paramedics. Colleen Janssen and Larry Petersen handled the coordination with the Department of Recreation and Parks. The Simi Valley participants will join nearly 600,000 volunteers around the world in devoting a few hours to handson volunteer service. more info

The public is invited to offer input at the meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the Plaza del Sol Community Room, 4231 Alamo St., Simi Valley. "We invite all opinionmakers and decisionmakers to attend," said Socorro Lopez Hanson, executive director of Community Action. "We hold these meetings every two years, listen to the information provided, analyze it and then compile a report that will guide us for the next two years. We want to make sure that the needs in Ventura County get the attention they deserve so that we can make it a better place to for all of our neighbors." more info

04 / 21 Habitat for Humanity Housing Workshop Start: 12:00 pm End: 1:00 pm Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County will conduct a homeownership workshop at noon at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 Los Angeles Ave. Attendance at the workshop is mandatory for an opportunity to help build and own one of three detached homes near the southeast corner of Royal and Sequoia avenues in Simi Valley. The homes are targeted for very-low-income families living in substandard conditions. Persons interested in obtaining one of these homes are required to bring to the workshop Social Security information for each household member, 2006 W-2 forms for each household member over age 18 and documentation of all sources of income. more info

04 / 26 Town hall meeting will address longterm plans for the Arroyo Simi Start: 6:30 pm End: 7:30 pm Town hall meeting will address longterm plans for the Arroyo Simi Park district wants input from the community The city of Simi Valley and Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will conduct a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road. The public is invited. The meeting will present the longterm plans and ideas for further enhancing and revitalizing the Arroyo Simi corridor. Those present will be encouraged to review plans and graphic displays and to participate in an openforum discussion. 04 / 28 Date set for annual Arroyo Cleanup Start: 9:00 am End: 12:00 pm The city of Simi Valley Neighborhood Council's fifth annual Arroyo Cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28. Volunteers will meet at Madera Road, south of Easy Street and behind The Decor Store. Waste Management will provide a complimentary barbecue lunch. Participants should wear sturdy shoes or rubber boots and bring digging tools. A signed waiver is necessary. All proceeds from the festival will go to Write 4 Hope, a nonprofit charitable organization providing support for the Simi Valley Samaritan Center and the Coalition to End Family Violence. more info
