logo3.jpgCommunity Action of Ventura County has scheduled a town hall meeting in Simi Valley to address poverty issues in the community and Ventura County.

The public is invited to offer input at the meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the Plaza del Sol Community Room, 4231 Alamo St., Simi Valley.

"We invite all opinionmakers and decisionmakers to attend," said Socorro Lopez Hanson, executive director of Community Action. "We hold these meetings every two years, listen to the information provided, analyze it and then compile a report that will guide us for the next two years. We want to make sure that the needs in Ventura County get the attention they deserve so that we can make it a better place to for all of our neighbors."

Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County will conduct a homeownership workshop at noon at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 Los Angeles Ave.

Attendance at the workshop is mandatory for an opportunity to help build and own one of three detached homes near the southeast corner of Royal and Sequoia avenues in Simi Valley.

The homes are targeted for very-low-income families living in substandard conditions.

Persons interested in obtaining one of these homes are required to bring to the workshop Social Security information for each household member, 2006 W-2 forms for each household member over age 18 and documentation of all sources of income.

Town hall meeting will address longterm plans for the Arroyo Simi
Park district wants input from the community

The city of Simi Valley and Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will conduct a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road. The public is invited.

The meeting will present the longterm plans and ideas for further enhancing and revitalizing the Arroyo Simi corridor. Those present will be encouraged to review plans and graphic displays and to participate in an openforum discussion.

Jeff Ferber, principal of RRM Design Group, was hired by the city to prepare the "Visioning" Study.

The city of Simi Valley Neighborhood Council's fifth annual Arroyo Cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28.

Volunteers will meet at Madera Road, south of Easy Street and behind The Decor Store. Waste Management will provide a complimentary barbecue lunch.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes or rubber boots and bring digging tools. A signed waiver is necessary.

The inaugural Write 4 Hope Blues Festival will blast into Simi Valley on Sat., April 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Oak Park, 901 Quimisa Drive in Simi Valley. All proceeds from the festival will go to Write 4 Hope, a nonprofit charitable organization providing support for the Simi Valley Samaritan Center and the Coalition to End Family Violence.

The Simi Valley Busy Hands Garden Club will host its annual plant sale Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the community room, Simi Valley Library, 2969 Tapo Canyon Road.

All proceeds will fund the club's community service projects, including support of the Friends of the Library, planting and maintenance of the Simi Valley Library Rose Garden, May Day flowers for hospital and convalescent home patients, planting trees in local parks for Arbor Day, purchase of pine trees for nearby reforestation projects and donations to Simi Valley Care and Share, the Samaritan Center and the Simi Valley High School nature center.

The Annual Street Fair Connects Business with Community

Produced by the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, but with a lot of help from business, organizations, the city and the community, the Simi Valley Street Fair has sold out of street space in past year’s events. This year will be no exception!

Held on Cochran Street, between Galena and Sequoia.

We are bringing back popular features such as the Emergency Expo, Kids Korner, over 300 booths lining Cochran Street displaying business products, sales of arts & crafts, promoting Community Organizations, Commercial vendors and Food Booths.

As part of the national Thanks Mom Marrow Donor Drive, the National Marrow Donor Program at Southern California will sponsor a drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Simi Valley Street Fair.
